This MaxBotix MB1340 XL-MaxSonar-AE4 Ultrasonic Sensor Module is for indoor use only.

Features of the MB1340, XL-MaxSonar-AE4, include centimeter resolution, has the highest noise tolerance and the narrowest beamwidth of any sensor in the XL‑MaxSonar‑AE sensor line, short to long-distance detection, range information from 20cm to 765cm, a 10Hz read rate, and various output options: analog envelope, analog voltage, and RS232 serial.

The MB1340 is a great choice for applications where only larger objects need to be detected.

The MB1340 from the XL‑MaxSonar‑AE line of sensors is a very small, less than one cubic inch, ultrasonic sensor component module. This sensor comes with mounting holes provided on the circuit board for easy installation in nearly all applications.

The XL-MaxSonar-AE4 sensors are factory calibrated to match narrow sensor beam patterns and provide reliable long-range detection zones.

In addition, the MB1340 offers virtually noise-free distance readings through the use of high-output acoustic power combined with continuously variable gain, real‑time background automatic calibration, real‑time waveform signature analysis, and noise rejection algorithms. This holds true even in the presence of many of the various acoustic or electrical noise sources.

Sensor Selection, Setup, and Troubleshooting

Setup Guide

1
Identify the pins
Locate VCC (power), GND (ground), and data pins (SDA/SCL for I2C, MOSI/MISO for SPI, or TX/RX for UART). Refer to the pinout diagram on the product page.
2
Wire to your microcontroller
Connect VCC to 3.3V or 5V (check the module spec), GND to GND, and data pins to the appropriate GPIO pins on your Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
3
Install libraries
In Arduino IDE, go to Sketch → Include Library → Manage Libraries and search for the sensor library. Install the recommended version.
4
Upload example sketch
Open File → Examples → [library name] → Basic Example. Upload to your board and open Serial Monitor to view output.
5
Calibrate if needed
Some sensors (temperature, humidity, distance) may need a short warm-up period or calibration. Run the calibration sketch if provided.
